Terms and conditions
An international move has obligations a domestic one does not, particularly around customs. Where your booking confirmation differs from anything here, the confirmation governs.
These summarise the standard trading terms of Norway Removals for household removals, packing, storage and associated customs work on the UK to Norway corridor.
1. Quotations
Quotations follow a survey, in person or by video, and are given in writing. A quotation stands for thirty days from issue unless stated otherwise. It reflects the goods, access, routing and services described or observed at the time.
Where the volume is materially greater on the day, where access at either end differs from what was described, or where you request additional work, the price may be adjusted. We will raise any change with you before carrying out the work.
2. Booking and payment
A booking is confirmed on written acceptance of the quotation and, where requested, payment of the stated deposit. On international moves the balance is generally due before departure rather than on delivery, and your confirmation will state which applies.
Duties, taxes or charges levied by Norwegian authorities are payable by you and are not included in our quotation unless it expressly says otherwise.
3. Cancellation and postponement
Cancel in writing. More than fourteen days before the booked departure, any deposit is refunded in full. Within fourteen days we may retain the deposit against crew, vehicle or shipping commitments already made.
Postponement is treated separately. On this corridor dates move for reasons outside everybody's control — permit decisions, property completions, sailing schedules — and our first response is always to re-plan rather than to charge.
4. Customs — your responsibilities
This clause matters more than any other here. You are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the information on which customs declarations are based, including the inventory, the values declared, and your statements about your residence and the ownership and use of the goods.
You are responsible for obtaining the identification, residence and address documentation Norwegian authorities require. We will tell you what is needed and when, and we will prepare and lodge the declarations using what you provide — but the declaration is made on your behalf and on your information.
We do not guarantee that any relief, including flyttegods relief on moving goods, will be granted. That decision rests with Norwegian customs on the evidence presented.
5. Customs — our liability
We are not liable for delay, storage charges, demurrage, duty, tax, penalty, detention or seizure arising from: information supplied to us that proves inaccurate or incomplete; documentation you have not obtained; a decision of a customs or other authority; or goods that prove to be restricted or prohibited.
Where such charges arise and are paid by us to release a consignment, they are recoverable from you.
6. Goods we will not carry
Prohibited, stolen or illegal goods; flammable, explosive or corrosive substances including gas bottles, paint, solvents and fuel; perishables; plants and living creatures; firearms and ammunition; controlled drugs.
Additionally, and specific to this route, Norway restricts alcohol, tobacco, certain foodstuffs and animal products. These sit outside the moving-goods relief and have their own rules — declare them or leave them behind. We strongly advise against placing jewellery, cash, deeds, passports or irreplaceable items in our care on an international move.
7. What we need from you
- Access and authority at both addresses, or an authorised person acting for you.
- Notice before the move of any item needing special handling or of unusually high value.
- Accurate information about access at the Norwegian end, including where a full-size vehicle cannot reach the property.
- Appliances drained, defrosted and disconnected unless we have agreed otherwise in writing.
- Prompt responses on customs documentation, since a delay there delays the consignment.
8. Liability for the goods
Goods-in-transit and public liability cover are in place; the cover level and the per-item limit appear on your quotation. Where you declared an item above the standard limit and we agreed additional cover in writing before departure, that agreed figure governs.
We are not liable for loss or damage arising from goods packed by you where the damage results from the packing; from inherent defect or ordinary wear; from electrical or mechanical failure without external damage; from atmospheric conditions including damp, mould, rust or temperature change over a long journey; or from circumstances beyond our reasonable control. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss.
9. Claims
Note visible loss or damage on the delivery paperwork at the time. Notify any claim in writing within seven days of delivery, or within seven days of goods leaving storage. Retain the item and its packaging until the claim is assessed — on an export move the packaging is often what establishes where the damage occurred.
10. Timing
Transit on this corridor is subject to sailing schedules, road and weather conditions, mandatory driver rest periods, customs clearance at both ends and, for shared loads, the consolidation schedule. Winter conditions materially affect northern Norway.
Any expected window given in a quotation is an estimate made in good faith and is not a contractual guarantee. We will keep you informed when something moves rather than going quiet.
11. Storage
Goods placed in storage at either end are subject to a separate storage agreement issued before collection, covering charges, billing period, notice for redelivery and the insurance basis. Charges are payable in advance of each period. We hold a general lien over goods in our possession for unpaid charges and may, after written notice, sell goods to recover sums owed.
12. Sub-contracting
We use our own crews and vehicles for the UK leg wherever possible. An international move necessarily involves third parties — shipping lines, ferry operators, and handling or delivery agents in Norway. We select them with care and remain your point of contact throughout; these terms continue to apply to the work as a whole.
13. Scope
We provide removals services on the UK to Norway corridor. We do not provide immigration, tax or vehicle-importation advice, and nothing on this site or from us should be relied upon as such. Where those matters affect your move we will say so and direct you to the appropriate authority.
14. Governing law
Governed by the law of England and Wales, with the courts of England and Wales having exclusive jurisdiction. Nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
15. Questions
