Removals to Stavanger from the UK
Norway's energy capital, and the destination with the oldest and deepest British connection. Most moves here run to somebody else's timetable, which changes how they are planned.
The relocation corridor
Stavanger is different from the other destinations on this site in one important respect: a large share of the moves are not personal decisions but professional ones. The offshore industry built a direct line between this coast and the UK energy sector decades ago, and it still moves households in both directions.
Practically, that means dates tend to be firm and set by someone other than you. A start date on a contract is not a date that flexes because a shared vehicle has not filled. So Stavanger moves lean towards dedicated loads more than any other destination we serve.
When an employer is involved
Plenty of these moves are funded or administered by a relocation department. That is entirely normal and we work with it, but it is worth flagging at survey rather than at invoicing, because it affects three things: who we bill, what documentation the employer requires, and occasionally whether there are caps on what is covered.
One genuine complication to raise early — if you are on a short posting and remaining UK-resident rather than transferring your residence to Norway, the flyttegods relief may not apply. That is a materially different customs position and it is far better established before packing than after arrival.
Getting there
Stavanger is the most genuinely balanced routing decision in Norway. It sits on the south-west coast, so a North Sea sailing is efficient. But it is also reachable overland — down the E39 coastal corridor, or across from Kristiansand if the route came up through Denmark and took the ferry into southern Norway.
Which we use comes down to your volume, your date and what is sailing. We will tell you the reasoning rather than just the answer. See the route page for how both options work.
Delivering into the Stavanger region
This is one of the easier parts of Norway to unload in. The city and its neighbours — Sandnes, Sola, Randaberg, Hafrsfjord — are dominated by houses and modern low-rise apartments with drives, off-street parking and sensible approach roads. Lifts where there are lifts tend to be modern and adequate.
The exception is Gamle Stavanger, the preserved quarter of white timber houses above the harbour. Narrow lanes, protected buildings, no room for a large vehicle. Beautiful to live in and a transfer job to move into.
What tends to come with people
Full households more often than partial ones, because these are multi-year moves rather than trial runs. That means the whole export packing standard applies and the inventory is long — which is exactly the situation where getting the customs documentation right the first time saves the most trouble.
If you are still weighing the move itself, the guide covers the sequencing — residence, property, then transport.
Good to know
Stavanger, the practical questions
Why is Stavanger such a common UK destination?
Energy. Stavanger is the centre of Norway’s offshore industry and has been since the 1970s, which built a long-standing connection with Aberdeen and the wider UK energy sector. A meaningful share of the households we move this way are relocating on a company posting rather than emigrating independently.
Does a company relocation change how the move works?
It changes the timetable and often the paperwork. Company moves usually come with a firm start date, which pushes towards a dedicated vehicle rather than groupage. They also often have an employer handling or contributing to the relocation, which affects who we invoice and what documentation is needed — tell us at survey rather than at the end.
How does a load get to Stavanger?
Either way, and the decision is genuinely balanced here. Stavanger is on the south-west coast, which makes a North Sea sailing efficient, but it is also reachable overland down the E39 from the Svinesund side or across from Kristiansand if the route came up through Denmark. We look at your dates and volume and pick.
What are deliveries like there?
Generally good. Stavanger and the neighbouring municipalities — Sandnes, Sola, Randaberg — are largely houses and modern low-rise apartments with drives, parking and room to work. The exception is Gamle Stavanger, the old white timber quarter, where the streets are narrow and the buildings are protected.
Is there a British community?
A substantial and long-established one, largely tied to the energy sector, with an international school and the associated infrastructure. It is probably the most straightforward place in Norway to arrive as a UK household, simply because the path is well worn.
Does the flyttegods relief work differently on a company move?
The relief attaches to you transferring your residence, not to who is paying for the move. So a company-funded relocation where you are genuinely moving to live in Norway sits on the same basis as any other. What can complicate it is a short posting where you remain UK-resident — that is worth establishing early, because it changes the declaration.
On a posting to Stavanger? Tell us the start date.
A firm date usually means a dedicated vehicle. Tell us early and we will plan backwards from it rather than hoping a shared load fills in time.
